I found this article {http://www.logodesignworks.com/blog/the-levis-logo-timeless-appeal} on a few reasons why Levi's is one of the most successful logos out there. I think this mark has been able to be versatile throughout the decades for Levi since it is simple, yet unique. The color and typeface, along with the tri-point shape that surrounds it, are visually bold and clear. I especially love the recent incarnation in the "Go Forth" print and TV ads.

This is my work so far for my illustration class project to create an illustration for Where the Wild Things Are. My concept is Max as one of the wild things. Instead of his bedroom turning into the forest it's his bathroom that does. He is suppose to be taking a bath and the sailboat is actually just a toy in the tub to begin with. 12:30: I wake up.

1:00: Take a shower. Get ready...Doing my makeup is my favorite part of the morning.

1:30: Pick something to wear...so many choices.

2:00: Wait for my sister. Nag her about hurring up so we can leave. She gets annoyed...and will hate me for putting this picture online. =)

3:00: We get to Hobby Lobby! I need to choose fabric to make the covering for my wine bottle.

4:00: We head over to Petsmart and see that they are doing pet adoption...so we have to take a look.

4:45: Tragically...my camera's batteries die and I have no more pictures until I got it charged again....

7:00: Working on my wine bottle project. Cutting out fabric and stuff.

10:30: Got a good bit done on my wine bottle cover. Then I loose my needle somewhere in the carpet and take a break. Start watching Project Runway...haven't been watching this whole season though.

11:30: After that it's a slow decline...start watching SNL. One of my favorite shows! Start laughing hysterically. Then I try to take a picture of me and my sister laughing and hold the camera the wrong way. This is her laughing at me...

3:45: I fell asleep on the couch. I finally wake up and actually go to bed.

Creative Brief: Bohemian Highway

Creative Brief: Bohemian Highway Wine Bottle Redesign

I chose to redesign Bohemian Highway's California Chardonnay. Bohemian Highway is a California-based winery. Their name comes from the actual stretch of road called the Bohemian Highway that runs through California.

I want to bring the feeling of the Bohemian lifestyle into the design. I plan to use handmade materials including patterned fabrics and natural fibers, representing the artistic lifestyle most Bohemians are known for.

For the wine bottle's label, I have chosen a handwritten-looking font combined with a whimsical script font. The color scheme I chose, a muted green and a deep brown, is neutral and evocative of nature. Also, I wanted to highlight the logo with a decorative border which is very popular in modern Bohemian style. I plan to print the label on a texture paper stock and adhere it to the bottle's base. Rather than taking the transfer approach, I think the paper will add a nice texture that will complement the handmade aesthetic I want to achieve.

As for the wine's packaging I want to create a sac made out of different strips of fabric that will be hand-sewn together. The sac will also have a drawstring sewn in that will cinch around the neck of the bottle. In addition, I may also decorate the drawstring with beads and charms. Furthermore, I am considering doing a stitching of the logo on the sac. These elements will hopefully bring together the crafty handmade aesthetic that is so typical of Bohemianism.

Here is one I've been working on for a while here at Borders...I think I like working in coffee shops/bookstores. Apparently this is the place to be on Sundays. Anyway, I want to print this one some nice textured paper. Then my idea for the "box" is going to be a fabric sac-type deal, that goes over the base of the bottle but leaves the neck exposed.

This is what I finally went with for my Concert poster for Illustration class. I did the band Mates of State based on their one lyric, "Cool your politics for a while, let the color schemes arise." The American flag and newspaper background is meant to represent American politics, while they are being transformed with flowing colors. I made this with newspaper collage with gel medium onto canvas, the paper sculpted flag on watercolor paper and painted with gauche, and the Mates of State name created with newspaper cut out on watercolor paper and gauche. I sculpted the paper by bending it and gluing it to the canvas with hot glue. The Mates of State lettering is elevated with Styrofoam blocks underneath. Then Stephen, our illustration teacher, had the photographer at his studio take a photo of my piece and I pushed the background contrast with Photoshop. Overall, I think this is my favorite piece I have ever done.

I'm gonna try to go to the Beverage Superstore or something this weekend and find some more options. The people and places I feel I must check in with every week are as follows:

My family: They keep me going. Whenever I'm in doubt about my life and what I'm doing with it they always tell me what I need to hear, whether it be encouragement or the hard truth. My mom is especially good at giving me the truth. My sister is really good at making me feel better about myself and understanding where I'm coming from since she does art too.
My roommate, Eunice: She brings me back down to earth. She's a biology/public relations major, so she's a good balance for me. She keeps it real.
The TV Show House: For some reason the cinematography on this show always puts me in a good mood. The atmosphere is muted, but clean. Plus Hugh Laurie doesn't hurt either. :)
Classmates Blogs: Have to check these to make sure I'm keeping on par with everyone.
Borders: I love this place! It's one of my favorite things to go to Borders with my dad and sister and look at all the books and magazines on a boring Sunday. I absolutely love looking at the new book covers on the bestseller tables.

Inspiring Publications

Lately, I've been into non-fiction work. The last book I read that I really loved was The Places that Scare You, which is by a Buddhist nun. If you have a chance you should check it out. Personally, it spoke volumes to me about not being afraid to simply live your life. I don't have this cover on my book but I thought it was really awesome.

Another one, Forget Perfect by an author from Atlanta no less. I have a big thing with wanting everything I do to be perfect, which is really exhausting. Apparently this author knows what I'm talking about.

Another great author, Alan Watts. I absolutely LOVE his stuff. He writes about Zen Buddhism for a Western audience, which is really fascinating. I most recently finished The Wisdom of Insecurity. It's a great read about being comfortable with instability.

This is the desk in my dorm room at the Lofts where I'm working right now, in fact. I have my laser printer/scanner/copier here. I share the tiny little room with my bestie, Eunice who helps critique my designs from time to time.

This is my commandeered workspace in our living room. That's the dining room table that I took for my own purposes topped with my gigantic Epson 1400 and all my mounting supplies. I also spend a lot of time in that armchair there working on concepts. The yellow bucket of markers beside there is also pretty fun. And that's my bestie's guitar...sadly neither of us are talented enough to actaully play a ditty. =(

Graphic Design Trends

Ok. One graphic design trend that has been going on for the past couple of years is the whole green/environmental deal. It seems like everyone and their mother is making a logo with a leaf or some kind of green theme. Some of them are really cool, but it can get redundant. Yeah, we know the world is going to burst into flames eventually, but do I really have to look at the same green leaves plastered over everything until it does? Here are some examples:

Ok...so I shop at Kroger because I figure it's cheaper. However, I refuse to buy the Kroger Value brand stuff because it's just so damn ugly. All the packaging is terrible. They could literally be scooping grape jelly out of a Smucker's Jar into the Value brand jar in front of my face and I would still pay a buck more to get the Smuckers. Yeah, I like my fridge to look nice...I'm a graphic design snob.

I finally finished printing everything for my portfolio! I am so relieved.
So, is everyone writing some kind of creative brief for their projects? I only wrote one for the Human Rights Declaration, telling why I picked the spreads I did. I don't know if I should do that for a few of the other projects?
But anyway, I'm pumped that this whole thing is almost over! I've had so much fun this semester. I've loved the whole re-branding project and everything we've been able to do. However, I have also had so much fun with all you guys! Everyone has been so helpful and kind. I'm glad I got to experience this with all of you, otherwise I probably would have gone insane! Good luck to everyone with portfolio review. I wish we could all get in!!!

I'm pretty proud of my crafty skills. I bought some metal letters and put my initials on the portfolio. Then I ran out of Ms and Ws...so I just wrote lauren on the box.

Religion has been a part of people's lives for thousands of years. So has design. We see design playing a central role in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics portraying man's connection with the gods and the afterlife. And when Gutenberg invented the printing press, it was the Bible that he is remembered for printing after all. Nowadays, what does the relationship between design and religion look like? Has it been forgotten or is it flourishing?

This rarely talked about topic has a great affect on both the Design and Religious community. So why does there seem to be such a significant disconnect? Often, the award-winning projects that you find in design annual publications do not include work created for the non-profit, religious community. Why? Is it not important enough to be considered or does it simply not exist? Is design seen as an integral part of communicating with parishioners, members, worshippers, and the community at large about religion?

If you're interested in these ideas or itching to share your theories, join us as we discuss our frustrations with, success in and suggestions for integrating Design and Religion.

Here is what I have so far for my 2 ads. I still need to take my own photos of the meat pies, which I think I'm going to be doing on Friday afternoon. But as far as the concept...it's pretty much how I envisioned it.
Any advice on what to do with the type to make it more interesting and fun would be greatly appreciated. I think it needs to have some more pizazz but I'm not sure what to do! Let me know what you think.

2. Something like a plane ticket or travel poster...like take a trip to the outback and you don't even need a passport
3. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oy Oy Oy!
4. Just a hop, skip, and jump away
5. Meatpies, Meatpies, Savory and Sweet Pies! (may bring up a bad connotation from Sweeny Todd...)
6. Incorporate the caution kangaroo sign some more
7. Australian flag on a meat pie
8. Meat + Pie... Trust us, It's Good
9. Australians eat over 5,000,000 meat pies a year...do your part.

Thinking about the Advertisement

Here are some fun print ads I've been looking at:

This one is just funny. I like how there isn't any type or description and the image can speak for itself.

I guess this one may be considered more of a poster. However, I like the collage technique they used. It reminds me of the ads we created in Intro to GRD. It also has a very Dada feel with the black and white images.

This one is really weird, but very interesting. I like how they made a reference to Surrealism, because they're talking about the "weird world of investment."

This one is really creative in my opinion, although I don't really understand the connection between Chavez and Luxor highlighters...? But anyway, I think they took a creative approach, kind of like the highlighter will show you what's important.

This one is funny. I like these type adds because they show you something unexpected.

This one must be pretty old. I was looking for illustrated print ads, since that's probably the direction I'll be going. I like the retro feel, because I think the Australian Bakery is kind of retro-ish.

I love this one! I like how it looks vintage, but uses contemporary graphic styles.

Direct Mailer Revision

I've been working on trying to incorporate more of my brand colors into the direct mailer piece. Originally, the mailer was all yellow and black. Now, I've done the inside white with the brand colors used on the logo and some of the text. I was concerned that the white on the inside would be too dull and boring. I don't know though, I don't think it's too bad. I also changed the background of the cut out image to be striped with my brand colors rather than black. Here's a comparison...

I was looking at some designs for promotional mailers today and came across these that I thought looked nice:

This design is very clean and put together. The photography is clear, but also seems warm and inviting. I also like how they handled the type, modern and fairly limited.

This brochure was created by the same artist as the one above. The use of the BP logo on the cover looks very clean and ties the piece together with the brand identity. The type is also san serif and modern looking, which fits the logo and brand.

Although I don't love the typography on this one, the concept is great. The red sheet goes over the green grassy looking image and it reveals the images. I just thought the innovation on this one was awesome!

Now, this design made by the same graphic design group is too cool for school. The opening suitcase is genius. The type is also handled in a fun way, I think.

These for IBM are also really nice. I like the use of color that really dominates the space and makes it stand out. The fact that the type is limited draws the attention to the product design instead of the information.

This one uses type in a really cool way.

This mailer is pretty clever. I like how they used unrelated images and brought them together with the strengths of their brand.

Innovation

I've been thinking and looking at other's designs for the business cards and stationary and feel that their work is really innovative and creative. Although I think my design would pop best on stark white paper, I feel it isn't very innovative. I wish there was a way I could incorporate some different kinds of paper or unconventional designs and techniques. However, I don't know how this would interact with my design.
Paige was showing our class these business cards that used cardboard drink containers and whatnot die cut into a shape. These ideas really intrigue me. The thing is, how would I relate something like that to the Australian Bakery. I feel like I should push my creativity a little more, but I don't want to get off track with the feel of my company or design by going too far. I need to think more on some materials that would fit, and maybe do some more research on what others have done.
I also have a question...how does printing on other materials work with copyrighting? For example, on the cardboard drink containers, those designs on there are probably already copyrighted. If I print my own material on the back and pass them out as my own design is that violating the copyright laws? Does anyone know?

I really like the colors on this stationary. They're vibrant but not too in your face. It also incorporates the squares in the logo, so the whole set is tied together.

These business cards are so cool. They used a stamp to make the logo bleed off the card. It's a cool technique and maybe I can get the same effect in Illustrator. Plus, this design is rustic, which would be fitting for my company.

I also found this super cool envelope that is completely die cut. I'm sure this would cost a mint, but it is possibly the coolest thing ever and love piggies...

The bold colors of this design attracted me. The logo is also incorporated in a cool way.

This is another more rustic look, and by rustic I mean vintage-y. I like how big the logo is on the envelope, maybe I could incorporate that.

Long Logo

I was thinking about the signage for the bakery, and the space to put the logo is really thin. I decided I should create a variation of the logo that would fit the awning over the entrance.
